Publish far more information about public services online

Last updated: 12:14pm 29 October 2019

We will publish far more information about public services online, including relevant information about local issues and public transport so that every person can find out up to date information about roadworks, planning applications and bus routes online, without the hassle and delay that currently exists.

Conservative Party Manifesto 2017, p.80

Our verdict

This policy sits within a broader promise in the manifesto to “create a new presumption of digital government services by default“. As part of that process, this policy promises to make more information available online. Although it refers to “public services” in general, the policy makes specific mention of information about “roadworks, planning applications and bus routes”. We’re focusing on those areas to arrive at our verdict.

Roadworks

From July to September 2019, the government held a consultation on the implementation of a new “Street Manager” digital service. The service will update the existing system (ETON) used for sharing information about roadworks. One of its key aims is to deliver:

“Open, accurate and up-to-date data on live and planned works made available for use…in journey planning apps, satnavs, etc.”

Planning applications

It is already possible to search the register of planning decisions via the government’s website. Currently, that search function simply directs users to the planning section at relevant local authorities. We found no enhancement of functionality under the current government.

Bus routes

From July to September 2018, the government held a consultation on ways to improve information for bus passengers. In its response to that consultation, the government outlines steps under consideration to improve online information regarding bus services. There’s also a website, in beta mode, which enables the search of registered local bus routes.

With consultations and planning afoot regarding providing more online information about roadworks and bus routes, we’re marking this as ‘in progress’. We’ll keep tracking to see which schemes are implemented, and whether anything develops around planning applications. Follow this policy for updates.

There's always room for debate

We’re serious about providing clear, up-to-date, non-partisan information. We focus on being consistent and fair in how we reach our verdicts, and always explain our reasoning. But there is always room for debate. So if you see it differently, we’d love you to tell us why. Or even better, submit an edit.
